Aquest és el pla docent de l'assignatura per al segon semestre del curs 2023-2024. English for Business is aimed at students who are interested in improving their communicative competence in English in the professional domain. It is a multilevel subject, but the minimum recommended level is B1 of the Common European Framework for Reference of Languages.
The course is taught entirely in English.

This is not a course for beginners. It is recommended that students who consider taking this subject have at least level B1 of the Common European Framework for Reference of Languages.

For some course components students will neeed to use external software such as Skype or PowerPoint.

On completing this subject, the student will be able to do the following:
- write work emails
- use specific Business English vocabulary
- participate in conversations on professional topics in formal and informal situations
- talk on the phone, take or leave a message, arrange a meeting, ask for information, etc.
- participate in a video conference
- take meeting minutes
- lead a work meeting
- structure and organize an oral presentation

- lead and manage work groups and projects in complex, dynamic, global environments
- develop self-management strategies and interpersonal skills in order to accomplish one's own objectives, as well as those of groups and organizations, and to establish and maintain positive relationships

Unit 1: Writing Skills for Work
- Opening and closing, informal vs. formal, key phrases, abbreviations, etc.
- Requesting and providing information, arranging a meeting, dealing with internal messages, etc.
- Invitations and directions, advice and suggestions, complaints and apologies.
Unit 2: Speaking Skills for Work
- Small talk - formal and informal English, being polite, asking for information and responding, etc.
- Telephone English - taking or leaving a message, arranging a meeting, asking for information, etc.
- Video conferences & Interviews - dealing with questions, giving information, etc.
Unit 3: Presentation Skills for Work
- The introduction to a presentation
- The body of the presentation, and strategies for successful presentation delivery
- Finishing up a presentation: concluding and summarizing
Unit 4: Meeting Skills for Work
- Getting the ball rolling: business collocations, formal and information correspondence, word stress
- Getting down to business: business idioms, politely exchanging opinions and interrupting
- Wrapping it up: describing numbers and units, clarifying meaning, writing meeting minutes
