The UOC cedes its materials adapted for visual impairment to the ONCE collection

As of last semester ONCE disposes of accessible UOC materials adapted for persons with severe visual impairment or blindness, thanks to the agreement signed by both entities.

The signed agreement reflects the desire of the UOC to promote technological innovation not only for the benefit of enrolled students, but also for the society it coexists with. The UOC’s commitment to the dissemination of knowledge and to being as accessible as possible in order to achieve this objective is manifested in three principal actions.

To begin with, the University will deliver all of the educational materials that it generates in DAISY format (Digital Accessible Information SYstem) to the ONCE collection of bibliographical adaptations. Consequently, ONCE will include all the titles ceded by the UOC in their catalogue of bibliographical resources adapted for ONCE, and they will be made available in their digital library.

Moreover, the UOC will provide ONCE with all the materials corresponding to subjects given by the University so that they can be adapted to Braille, with the aim of responding to the needs for accessibility to content presented by blind or severely visually impaired students enrolled at the UOC and who request this from ONCE. The UOC, in return, will disseminate all of these adapted materials among students and potential students who are users of this system of reading and writing.

Lastly, the agreement also includes orientation, training, and support in the postproduction of the UOC’s educational materials in audio format (DAISY).

This collaboration will last two years and is extendible. In this way, the UOC is continuing its work in the areas of training, innovation, and research as a university committed to overcoming barriers in time and space through the use of new technologies.
